Opening Doors: An Investigation of Barriers to Senior Housing for Same-Sex Couples

February 2014 | Equal Rights Center

Permission Form

“This investigation is the first of its kind to focus on providing objective, quantitative data specific to older same-sex couples seeking senior housing."

This report documents the results of 200 matched-pair telephone tests conducted by the ERC in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington. In 96 of the 200 tests (48%), a tester inquiring about housing in a senior living facility for a same-sex couple experienced at least one form of adverse differential treatment, as compared to a counterpart tester inquiring about housing for a heterosexual couple.

I would like to look at the data from Arizona, if available. We are beginning to talk about this issue here in Tucson AZ, which is a prime destination for LGBTQ seniors retiring from other parts of the country

How about considering a workable roommate connection service specifically for retired LGBT. There exists a gay roommate service, but it doesn't work and isn't for retired people. I'd be happy to help. For example, I have a spacious 4 bedroom home and it would be a pleasure, as a widow, to share with someone in like circumstances. Just a thought. Well, that is after I nudge my 40 year old daughter out of the est (smile).

I participated in a study conducted by the University of Miami in Miami Florida but never got the results of the study. We are starting, with the cooperation of JCS a SAGE chapter in Miami fl. Very interested in the housing for Elders program. Please keep me inform.
