Cultural Competency Trainings
Cultural competency training is the foundation for all person-directed care, but it can be difficult to locate high-quality training content. Below you can find various training programs designed and facilitated by leaders in LGBT aging advocacy and cultural competency.
SAGECare Credential Program
The NRC's host organization SAGE (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders), the nation's oldest and largest organization dedicated to supporting LGBT older adults, offers a training program called SAGECare. SAGECare provides training and consulting on LGBT aging issues to service providers, and offers the added benefit that qualifying agencies may receive a national credential to highlight the percentage of staff trained.
SAGECare trainings cover topics such as:
- The basics about what LGBT means
- Stories of real LGBT older adults—and how their lives have intersected with changes in how society thinks about and treats LGBT people
- Skills to work with LGBT older adults
- Suggested improvements across multiple departments including: programming, policy and procedures, marketing, facilities, and staff and board recruitment.
- And many more specialized topics.

Training for ACL / AoA Funded Network
Organizations that receive funding from the Administration for Community Living (ACL) or the Administration on Aging (AoA) may be eligible to participate in SAGECare webinar trainings at no cost. SAGECare in-person trainings are available for a fee (Note: fees are nonprofit rates, set in order to cover our costs). Learn more about the SAGECare trainings or request a training quote for your agency.
We offer the following on-demand presentation content that you may access free-of-charge:

Other In-person Presentations
NRC Volunteer Education Ambassador Program
Volunteer Education Ambassadors are available to come to your communities and give an introductory presentation about LGBT aging issues. Each Ambassador is responsible for determining the area(s) in which they will present as well scheduling their presentations. The National Resource Center on LGBT Aging does not schedule these presentations directly—you must do so directly with the Ambassador.
National Conferences and Events
NRC and SAGE staff regularly present at national and regional aging and LGBT conferences. Please check our events page to see if there is a session near you.
