Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Gerontology offers a course titled "LGBT and Aging" which is an introduction to studying cultural competence, cultural humility and the aging Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community. Topics of discussion focus on fear of discrimination from healthcare professionals and its socio-genesis, unique differences between sexual orientation and gender identity and overcoming barriers to inclusion. The Department also provides continuing education opportunities to train healthcare professionals on the issues related to aging as an LGBT older adult.
