Providing Services to Transgender Older Adults: Tips for SMP Staff and Volunteers
September 2014 | SAGE (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders), FORGE Transgender Aging Network
“Most of the issues transgender Medicare beneficiaries have will be exactly
the same as those everyone else’s. Transgender people experience the
whole range of chronic diseases, illnesses, injuries, and frauds everyone
else is subject to; most of the time you will serve these clients and never
even realize that they are transgender. Here are the major trans-specific
issues that may come up.”
This tip sheet is intended for Senior Medicare Patrol staff and volunteers to provide basic information on the transgender older adult communities. Senior Medicare Patrols (SMPs) empower and assist Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse through outreach, counseling, and education.
